An engrossing look at the power struggle between Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, two of the most significant Mafia bosses of the 1950s, is promised in Barry Levinson’s The Alto Knights. Given that renowned actor Robert De Niro would play both parts, there was a reasonable assumption that the movie would offer an engaging and thrilling look at the history of organized crime. The makings of a legendary mob film appeared to be in place when you combine it with a storyline written by Nicholas Pileggi, the author of Goodfellas. But in the end, The Alto Knights stumbles to establish itself, producing a fragmented and unimpressive story that doesn’t make an impression.
