The movie opens with Pattinson’s character having fallen into a deep cave, and it is based on Edward Ashton’s science fiction book “Mickey 7.” His friend Timo makes a fleeting appearance before leaving him behind and bidding him “a nice death.” Mickey’s perceptive narration now cuts to a flashback from four years ago, detailing how he and Timo opened a French macaron shop and accrued substantial debt to a loan shark. The only option was to depart the planet in order to avoid the loan shark’s unrelenting pursuit. The dystopian humor of the film is greatly enhanced by these exaggerations, which also fit in well with the protagonist’s job as a “expendable.” Mickey is used as a vaccine test subject and sent on dangerous missions for the sake of progress.
