Description

There is a certain kind of Helldivers 2 mission where the primary objective is completed almost effortlessly, only for the squad to spend the next ten minutes arguing with the map over a handful of resources. Helldivers 2 Medals may drive Warbond progression, but Samples create a different kind of temptation because they are directly connected to Stratagem upgrades through the ship. Normal, rare, and super rare Samples all have their place in progression, and higher difficulties offer access to more valuable varieties. The result is a resource system that naturally encourages players to look beyond the obvious mission path.

The problem is that the obvious mission path usually exists for a reason. Every extra building, side objective, and unexplored corner can become another place where enemies appear. A squad that decides to collect everything on the map can easily spend more time fighting than completing the actual operation. The trick is to turn Sample collection into a controlled part of the mission rather than allowing the resource hunt to dictate every movement.

One useful approach is to divide the operation into phases. Early in the mission, the squad can explore more freely because reinforcement reserves and ammunition are generally healthier. After several objectives have been completed, the team should become increasingly selective. A resource located close to the current route may still be worth collecting, while a distant point of interest surrounded by hostile activity may not justify the risk.

The Void makes this calculation more complicated. The 7.0 update introduced a new biome and mutated Illuminate enemies, with the Crusher and Wretch bringing very different forms of pressure. The Crusher regenerates while taking heavy damage and needs sustained attacks, while the Wretch can dodge and leap toward players. A squad that gets distracted by a resource can therefore be punished by an enemy that was not even part of the original plan.

The Wretch is particularly effective at exposing poor squad spacing. Imagine three players searching a resource location while the fourth checks a nearby route. If a Wretch suddenly crosses the open ground, the squad may react by turning in four different directions at once. That moment of confusion is exactly when a minor enemy becomes dangerous. Keeping a clear division between the player searching, the player covering, and the player watching the wider approach can make the same situation much easier to control.

The Crusher requires more discipline. Its ability to regenerate while taking heavy damage means that half-hearted attacks can waste time. If the squad decides to fight, it should maintain enough pressure to finish the encounter efficiently. If the team decides that the area is not important, breaking contact and moving toward the next objective can be the better choice. The presence of a valuable Sample does not automatically make every fight worth taking.

Ironclad Democracy provides several tools that can support this more flexible approach. The AR-11 Arbitrator combines rapid-fire ammunition with an underslung shotgun, giving its user an answer for both normal engagements and sudden close-range pressure. The GL-15 Evictor uses a pump-action grenade launcher and manual single-round reloads, making deliberate ammunition use important. The P-34 Breacher provides another option against armored targets through sticky phosphorous projectiles.

Those weapons also create different movement habits. The Arbitrator encourages a player to stay flexible when the engagement distance changes. The Evictor rewards anticipation because its reload rhythm makes every shot more deliberate. The Breacher can give a player more confidence when approaching areas where heavier targets may appear. None of these tools eliminates the need for good movement, but each can change how aggressively a player is willing to explore.

The new armor is useful in a different way. The BFM-16 Tanker and BFM-220 Ironclad feature Blunt-Force Mitigation, which reduces damage from impacts and collisions by 30% while making the wearer more resistant to being knocked down. That can matter during Sample runs because getting knocked over near a resource is more than a minor inconvenience. It can interrupt an interaction, expose the player to additional attacks, and give nearby enemies enough time to close the distance.

There is also a psychological trap in Sample hunting: the value of a resource can make players ignore the condition of the squad. A player sees a valuable Sample and immediately wants it, even when ammunition is low, reinforcements are nearly exhausted, and enemies are approaching from multiple directions. The better question is not simply “Can we collect it?” but “Can we collect it without damaging the rest of the operation?”

SEAF support creates some interesting opportunities here. When a SEAF platoon appears on a Void planet, friendly NPC troops can partici
